Bighorn Canyon Preparing for Summer

Written by on February 28, 2017

Tomorrow is the first day of March – and that’s the month in which the staff at Bighorn Canyon will begin preparing the park for summer.

Officials at Bighorn Canyon say that after several months of snow and cold weather, the sun has come out and started to melt the ice and snow. There is open water along the lake shore at both Horseshoe Bend and Barry’s Landing.

The ice has started to deteriorate, so residents are urged to use extreme caution if ice fishing. All the roads are clear, but limited travel is advised on gravel and dirt roads until the mud dries out.

Additional summer preparations include repair of the Horseshoe Bend public dock, and work on Horseshoe swim beach will also begin again soon. Staff is hoping to have it ready for seeding by the end of March, weather dependent. Mel McArthur, South District Maintenance Foreman, says the beach should be open for Memorial Day weekend if all goes as planned.
