Chronic Wasting Disease Detected in City Deer

Written by on March 1, 2017

A deer killed by police in the Cody City limits has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

As part of the City’s program to control the deer population in the City limits, the police department obtained a special permit from the Game and Fish to cull 50 deer. The deer are then tested for CWD before making the animals available to citizens who can process the meat for their own use.

According to Game and Fish officials, one of the deer tested positive for the disease, which affects the brain and central nervous system in deer and can spread from animal to animal. Officials say the last time a deer in Cody tested positive for CWD was about two years ago.
