Cody Basketball Earns Weekend Sweep over Powell, Wyoming Indian

Written by on January 13, 2020

IT WAS A WEEKEND SWEEP FOR THE CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS AS BOTH THE BRONCS AND FILLIES EACH WENT 2-0 OVER THE WEEKEND DEFEATING POWELL AND WYOMING INDIAN. THE FILLIES ARE ON A 5 GAME WIN STREAK WHILE THE BRONCS PICKED UP THEIR FIRST TWO WINS OF THE SEASON.

AFTER BOTH TEAMS DEFEATED POWELL FRIDAY EVENING THEY WERE BACK IN THE FRIENDLY CONFINES OF THE SWEITZER GYMNASIUM SATURDAY HOSTING WYOMING INDIAN. IN THE FIRST GAME OF THE DAY KENNEDI NIEMANN HIT A CLUTCH GO AHEAD 3-POINTER WITH 10 SECONDS REMAINING IN THE GAME, TEAGAN THOMPSON SEALED THE CONTEST WITH LATE FREE THROWS AND THE CODY FILLIES ERASED A 10-POINT DEFICIT TO DEFEAT WYOMING INDIAN 45-42.

THE LADY CHIEFS WOULD LEAD EARLY HOLDING ONTO A 14-11 ADVANTAGE AFTER THE 1ST QUARTER. SCORING WAS HARD TO COME BY IN THE SECOND QUARTER AS BOTH TEAMS COMBINED TO SCORE 13 POINTS AND WYOMING INDIAN WENT INTO HALFTIME WITH A 20-18 LEAD.

IN QUARTER NUMBER THREE THE CODY FILLIES WOULD FIND THEMSELVES DOWN BY AS MANY AS 11 POINTS AS THEY WERE OUTSCORED 14-7 IN THE QUARTER AND TRAILED 34-25 AT THE END OF THE THIRD FRAME.

THERE WAS NO PANIC FOR THE FILLIES, AS THEY RESPONDED WITH A VENGEANCE IN THE FOURTH QUARTER OUTSCORING THE LADY CHIEFS BY 12 POINTS CAPPED OFF BY THE KENNEDI NIEMANN GO-AHEAD 3-POINTER TO SEAL-THE-DEAL.

LEADING THE WAY FOR THE FILLIES WAS KENNEDI NIEMANN AND TORRIE SCHUTZMAN WHO COMBINED TO SCORE 36 OF THE TEAMS 45 POINTS. NIEMANN LED THE WAY WITH 19 WHILE SCHUTZMAN DROPPED IN 17.

WITH THE WIN THE FILLIES IMPROVE THEIR SEASON RECORD TO 5-2 AND ARE CURRENTLY RIDING A 5-GAME WIN STREAK.

IN THE SECOND GAME OF THE DOUBLE HEADER THE CODY BRONCS BUCKED THEIR WAY OUT OF A 10-POINT HOLE AND DROPPED IN A SEASON HIGH 76 POINTS TO DEFEAT WYOMING INDIAN FOR THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN.

THE CHIEFS WOULD GET ON THE BOARD FIRST AND LED AFTER THE FIRST QUARTER 11-7 AND WERE CARRIED BY DEREK NIPWATER’S 18 POINTS IN THE FIRST HALF TO TAKE A 31-27 LEAD INTO THE INTERMISSION.

IT WAS THE THIRD QUARTER WHEN THINGS STARTED TO TURN AROUND FOR THE CODY BRONCS. AFTER OPENING THE THIRD QUARTER FLAT COACH KRAFT MADE A SUBSTITUTION THAT COMPLETELY CHANGED THE GAME. WITH JUST ONE MINUTE GONE IN THE QUARTER HE BENCHED THE STARTING FIVE AND BROUGHT IN THE “BENCH MOB” TO PROVIDE A SPARK, AND THAT THEY DID. AFTER TRAILING BY 10 IN THE THIRD QUARTER THE GROUP OF NIC TALICH, CODY PHILLIPS, CALEB PRYOR, JACKSON DAVIS AND CANYON DIM PROVIDED JUST THE SPARK THE BRONCS NEEDED AND PULLED THE TEAM WITHIN 3 POINTS. THE STARTERS WERE THEN PUT BACK IN LATE IN THE QUARTER, THE BRONCS TOOK THE LEAD TO END THE QUARTER 48-46 AND NEVER LOOKED BACK AS THEY WENT ON FOR THE 76-66 VICTORY.

LEADING THE WAY FOR THE BRONCS WAS HUNTER HAYS WITH 22 POINTS, COY NOVAKOVICH ADDED 16 AND LUKE TALICH HAD 15.

WITH THE WIN THE BRONCS ARE NOW 2-5 ON THE SEASON.

UP NEXT: THE CODY BASKETBALL TEAMS RETURN TO 4A PLAY NEXT WEEKEND AS THEY ARE ON THE ROAD TO FACE CASPER NATRONA FRIDAY AND THEN ON SATURDAY THEY’RE ON THE ROAD FOR THEIR FIRST QUAD GAME GOING UP AGAINST THE RIVERTON WOLVERINES.
