Written by Cole Havens on July 26, 2020
THE POWELL PIONEERS ARE THE WESTERN A DISTRICT CHAMPIONS WITH A 4-3 WIN OVER CODY SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND WILL BE THE NUMBER 1 SEED AT THE STATE TOURNAMENT NEXT WEEK.
PARK COUNTY RIVALS CLASHED ON THE DIAMOND ONCE AGAIN ON SUNDAY AS POWELL HANDED CODY THEIR FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS OF THE SUMMER. THIS WAS CODY’S FIRST LOSS TO A CLASS A OPPONENTS SINCE LOSING TO CASPER BACK IN MID JUNE.
THE CUBS WOULD GET ON THE BOARD EARLY THANKS TO A JARED GRENZ 2-RUN HOME RUN BUT THE PIONEERS WOULD CLAW BACK CAPITALIZING ON CODY MISCUES AND TIED THINGS UP AT 2 A PIECE AFTER FIVE INNINGS OF PLAY. THE CUBS WOULD GET A RUN ACROSS THE BOARD IN THE 6TH INNING BUT STRUGGLED OFFENSIVELY AS THEY WERE HELD TO THEIR LOWEST OFFENSIVE OUTPUT IN THE TOURNAMENT.
POWELL ENTERED THE TOP OF THE 7TH TRAILING BY ONE AND WOULD GET THE FIRST TWO BASE RUNNERS ON BOARD WITH COLIN QUEEN LAYING DOWN A SACRIFICE BUNT THAT TIED UP THE GAME. KOBE OSTERMILLER THEN KNOCKED IN WHAT WOULD BE THE GAME WINNING RUN WITH AN RBI DOUBLE.
WITH THE LOSS CODY FINISHES THE DISTRICT A TOURNAMENT 3-1 AND ENTERS NEXT WEEKS STATE TOURNAMENT AS THE 2 SEED. CODY BEGINS PLAY SATURDAY VS. THE 3 SEED OUT OF THE EAST, TORRINGTON.
