Cody Football Preview for Riverton

Written by on September 4, 2020

The Cody Bronc Football team will take to Spike Vannoy Stadium for their first official game of 2020 today. The Broncs are coming off a 2019 campaign in which they went 8-2 and now get set to host the Riverton Wolverines for their first game of 2020. Last week’s scrimmage vs. Douglas provided plenty of insight into what this year’s group will look like and Head Coach Matt McFadden is more than pleased with the energy and effort early on. One of the biggest questions for tonight’s game is who will start at Quarterback. Coach McFadden on what he’s seen from that position group.

“I thought Caleb stepped up as a Senior and showed good leadership, made some good decisions, threw some great balls. Stood in the pocket, took some big hits but stood in there and threw it. Luke comes in. Luke’s a dynamic athlete. Offers us something a little bit different and he did a good job as well. Porter got a lot of work this week in JV along with Luke on some stuff. They just continue to get better and better. I don’t know if you’ll see all three of them but we’re going to see some different quarterbacks this year.”

Riverton is coming off a 37-7 loss last week vs. Powell and Coach gives insight into this week’s game prep.

“These early games, these non-conference games. The whole idea behind them is they’re just preparing you for conference. You want to win every game. That’s the goal, right? I mean, I think a bigger goal and more realistic goal is we take these games and we’re worried about ourselves and how are we going to improve? That’s the bottom line. If Cody Broncs improve then we’re going to be in a good spot. Riverton’s a quality opponent. It’s not that we’re not worried about Riverton at all, it’s just at this point in the season we need to focus on ourselves and cleaning our stuff up.”

One of the more exciting aspects of this year’s team has to be the change at defense. New D-Coordinator Jim Talich gave us a taste last week.

“They’re fast. They’re incredibly fast and they have to be. It comes down to style we’re playing right now is a big play defense and we’ve gotta make some big plays in it, get some tackles for losses, make some things happen and I think they can. I’m excited for them. You’ve got a group of some veteran guys in the mix of some young guys in there. So they’re playing well off each other, communicating well. I thought we tackled well, especially for the first game, you always worry about that. Yeah, speed kills and they can fly.”

Like many football games it’s the Offense and Defensive lines that will dictate the game and Coach McFadden says in order to come away victorious they’re this team’s X-Factor.

“Defense comes down to the big boys up front on either side of the ball, so. And they’re in for it tonight, with Riverton. Riverton is huge. Maybe the biggest High School team I’ve seen in a long time. So they’re going to have their hands full but we’re fast and we’re athletic, and we’ve got to use that. I think the O-Line and D-Line. Just the line of scrimmage.”

The Cody Broncs Kick-off the 2020 season tonight as they welcome Riverton into Spike Vannoy Stadium. Join me for all the play-by-play action on KODI. Pre-game at 4:40, Kick-off at 5pm.

“We’re excited to be at home. It’s going to be an early game, it’s going to be light, it’s going to be a little bit different but everything this year’s a little different. We’re excited. It’s a home game, it’s football, it’s the fall. It’s just High School football going on now. There’s no college, we’re the only game.
