THE CODY TENNIS TEAMS ARE BACK ON THE COURT FOR ONE FINAL WEEKEND AS THEY’RE TAKING PART IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT IN GILLETTE. THE FILLIES COME OFF A SECOND PLACE FINISH AT THE REGIONAL TOURNAMENT LOSING TO KELLY WALSH BY 1 POINT, 52-53. HEAD COACH NORM SEDIG TALKS ABOUT WHAT THE TEAM WORKED ON HEADING INTO STATE.
“WE LET THEM WORK ON WHAT THEY NEED TO. THEY TAKE A BALL HOPPER WITH THEIR PARTNER. THEN THEY WORK ON VOLLEY’S, OR OVERHEAD’S OR SERVES. SOME OF THEM PLAY MATCHES. WE JUST KIND OF GIVE THEM THE FREEDOM WITH WHAT THEY WANT TO (WORK ON). MY COACHES, VOLUNTEER AND ASSISTANT: THEY CAN FEED THEM DIFFERENT BALLS FOR DIFFERENT STROKES. SO WE JUST FOCUS MAINLY ON THEIR WEAKNESSES AND TRY TO MAKE THEM STRONGER AND PREPARED FOR STATE THAT WAY.”
THE FILLIES GO INTO THIS TOURNAMENT AS ONE OF THE TOP TEAMS IN THE STATE AND COMING OFF THAT 1 POINT DEFEAT IT’S CLEAR WHAT THEY MUST DO TO EARN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
“THEY’VE JUST GOT TO FINISH HIGHER IN EACH OF THEIR DIVISION BECAUSE NOW THERE’S 16 SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF 8. THEIR’S JUST ONE CLASS OF TENNIS IN WYOMING. SO NOW WE’VE GOT TO GO AGAINST THE CHEYENNE’S, GILLETTE’S, SHERIDAN’S AND CASPER’S. ITS JUST THAT, YOU KNOW THEY’RE ALL GOOD. WE’VE JUST GOT TO MEET OUR OPPONENT AND BRING ON THE COMPETITION AND GET AFTER THEM.”
AS FOR THE BRONCS, THEY ARE ENTERING THE FINAL WEEKEND OF PLAY WITH AN UNDERDOG MENTALITY.
“I THINK THEY’LL MAKE SOME NOISE AT STATE. I’VE SEEN SINGLES, DOUBLES AND TEAMS HAVE NOT A VERY GOOD REGIONAL AND THEN COME BACK THE NEXT WEEK, WEEK LATER AND HAVE A GOOD STATE OR VICE VERSA. SO I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO OUR BOYS. I THINK WE’LL MAKE SOME NOISE. WE’RE KIND OF A SLEEPER IN ALL FIVE ENTRIES AND I THINK THEY’LL DO WELL. I REALLY DO.
THE CODY TENNIS TEAMS ARE IN GILLETTE THROUGH THE WEEKEND TAKING PART IN THE STATE TOURNAMENT. STAY TUNED TO THE BIG HORN RADIO NETWORK FOR RESULTS.
