Cubs Sweep Lovell for First Conference WIns

The Cody Cubs were back in action Tuesday night as they welcomed the Lovell Mustangs to Milward L. Simpson Stadium for the team’s first conference games of the summer.

In game 1, Devyn Engdahl would take to the mound and throw 5.2 innings of four hit baseball, gave up three (two earned) and struck out seven in a 4-3 win over Lovell.
After four flawless innings, from Engdahl, the Mustangs would get things going in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back doubles from CJ Pickett and Cason James would put Lovell on the board first.
The Cubs had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. With one out and runners on second and third Tristan Blatt would step up to the plate and knocked in a Two RBI single to give Cody the 2-1 lead. Jackson Schroeder would then reach on an error which scored Blatt and Engdahl brough Schroeder in on an RBI single to give Cody the 4-1 lead heading into the sixth.
After Lovell would manage to score two more runs in the sixth inning Tristan Blatt would come on to close things out for the four out save and Cody held on to win game 1 by one run.
In game 2, the bats came alive for both teams as both teams combined to throw seven different pitchers. Lovell would strike first opening the game with two runs in the first, Cody would battle back and tied things up at two-a-piece after two innings before Lovell knocked in two more.
After the Cubs scored one in the bottom of the third it was the fourth inning that belonged to Cody. The Cubs brought 11 batters to the plate in their half of the fourth, scored seven runs on five hits and took a commanding 10-4 lead after four innings of play. After Lovell scored again, Jackson Schroeder would launch his fourth home run of the season, a moon shot over the left field fence. After each team would score again in the sixth and seventh, this time it was Trey Schroeder who came on in relief to secure the final outs in Cody’s 13-8 game 2 victory.
With the sweep of Lovell, the Cubs are now 12-3 overall this season and open conference play 2-0.
