Dozens Assisted in “Dentistry” Event

Local residents took advantage of free dental work last Friday during an annual event put on by a couple of local dentists.
Dentistry From The Heart is a nationwide movement that offers free dental care to those who can’t afford it. The idea was brought to Cody last year by Dr. David Taylor, who offered free cleanings, up to 2 fillings, or up to 2 extractions for no cost to uninsured adults on a first come first serve basis.
Nationwide, Wyoming ranks 38th in the country for dental habits and care among its population, and 36th for overall oral health. While long-term gum infection can eventually result in the loss of your teeth, recent research suggests that there may be an association between oral infections — primarily gum infections — and poorly controlled diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
According to staff at Dr. Taylor’s office, last Friday 58 people took advantage of the services, which were offered by Taylor and Dr. Devon Holeman. Volunteers were on hand to pass out forms and provide food and beverages to those who were waiting both inside the building and in the overflow area set up outside.
