Efforts Underway to Recover Sunken Boat on Bighorn Lake

Written by on August 23, 2018

The boat that was involved in the accident on Bighorn lake that claimed three lives and put a man in the hospital is still under water.
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area Superintendent Mike Tranel says that efforts are underway to retrieve the vessel, which sank on August 11th. Hazardous material booms and marking buoys have been placed at the site, and the park is asking boaters stay at least 50 yards or 150 feet from the booms to allow them to properly capture any fluids that may leak from the boat.
Tranel expressed his thanks to the search team, fellow agencies and local businesses for their help with the search efforts. And Chris Valdez, the incident commander for the search, said that the collaboration of the different park teams, volunteer organizations, and agencies, was instrumental in making the rescue and recovery successful.
However, the investigation into the accident continues. If anyone has information on the accident, they are asked to call or text the National Park Service Investigative Services Branch at 1-888-653-0009.
