Fillies Win Big, Broncs Drop Heartbreaker vs. Powell

Written by on December 17, 2020

Behind stifling defense and 22 combined points from Lake Harrison and Kennedi Niemann, the Cody Fillies cruised to a 43-17 win over Park County Rival, Powell, Thursday night.

In the Fillies home opener they held Powell scoreless through one quarter of play. The Powell Lady Panthers didn’t get their first bucket of the game to go down until mid way through the second quarter. By then the Fillies had built a 25 point lead. Kennedi Niemann would lead the Fillies in scoring in the first half dropping in all of her 11 points in the half. Cody took the lead into the break with a 27-6 advantage.

The Fillies would hit a lull in the the third quarter scoring just four points but by then the game was already out of hand. Lake Harrison would drop in four of her 11 points in the fourth quarter, one of which was a block that she was able to then take coast-to-coast for the score.

In addition to 22 points by Lake Harrison and Kennedi Niemann, Molly Hays and Izzy Radakovich would each score eight points.

It was an overall defensive demolition by the Fillies who improve to 2-1 with the win.

In the nightcap the Cody Broncs had three players score in double figures but it was not enough as Powell made just enough plays to come away with the 53-49 win.

The Broncs would find themselves trailing at the half 34-25 but made the necessary adjustments and put together a fantastic third quarter where they held the Panthers to just six points while scoring 13.

After trailing by 11 at the half the Broncs had cut the Panthers lead to just two entering the final frame. The final quarter would go down to the final buzzer, neither team giving an inch but in the end Powell would end the game making their final six free throws to seal it.

The Broncs held Powell to just 19 second half points. Luke Talich would lead the way for Cody with 13 points, Caleb Pryor had 11 and Cody Phillips added 10 for the Broncs who fall to 0-3.

Up Next: Both Cody teams will hit the road for their first 4A competition as they travel East to face Sheridan. It’s an afternoon contest with the girls underway at 1:30pm, the boys to follow. As always, you can hear those games live on KODI.
