Forest Service Lays Out Firewood Rules

Written by on March 6, 2019

Be careful where you pick your firewood.

Recently, the Shoshone National Forest’s district office in Cody has been fielding questions concerning the removal of wood from piles within the Sugarloaf Timber Sale area in the Clarks Fork area. Forest officials point out that removal of firewood from a timber sale area is not permitted.

District Ranger Sue Stresser asks that people stay clear of the timber sale area for several reasons: first, the wood within the area has been purchased and is not available to personal firewood cutters; and second, for safety.

Stresser points out that logging operations on the Sugarloaf Timber Sale are now running both day and night shifts, and with five or more large truckloads of timber being hauled off the site per day, the public should not utilize any temporary roads associated with the sale.

However, personal use firewood permits are available throughout the year at all district offices in Cody, Lander, and Dubois.
