Heart Mountain Trail Open

The public is once again invited to hike the trail at the Nature Conservancy’s Heart Mountain Ranch Preserve.
Due to bear activity, the Heart Mountain trail had been closed since April. Carrie Peters with the Nature Conservancy says to keep bears and people safe, the past two years they’ve made the decision to close the trail in the spring. But she says that bears have spread out now, so the danger of human-bear conflicts has subsided somewhat.
The Nature Conservancy owns the land that has the only public access trail to hike to the top of Heart Mountain, which starts at the base of the mountain on the east side.
Peters says the Nature Conservancy purchased the 13,000 acre property in the late 1990s due to the conservation value of the open space and wildlife habitat.
