Highway 14A Scheduled to Open Tuesday

Written by on May 18, 2018

Highway 14A between Lovell and Burgess Junction is opening Tuesday at noon, if weather permits.
The winter closure of a 22 mile stretch of the scenic highway west of Burgess Junction is an annual occurrence in the Bighorn Mountains. The Wyoming Department of Transportation generally closes the road at the conclusion of the fall hunting season, and usually opens for the summer by Memorial Day weekend.
Wyoming Department of Transportation maintenance foreman Jason Fleming of Lovell says although more snow in the mountains is expected tonight, they plan to have the road open by noon on Tuesday. A few more maintenance activities must be completed on Monday, according to Fleming, including clearing snow from the runaway truck ramp on our side of the mountain.
On the other side of the Basin, Cody Beers with WYDOT notes that Highway 212 opened last Friday, between Highway 296 and Cooke City, Montana and the Northeast Gate of Yellowstone. However, the Beartooth All-American Road east of Highway 212’s intersection with the Chief Joseph Highway, on the way to Red Lodge, Montana, has not opened. However, Beers says road crews from the Montana Department of Transportation are making good progress.
