Hopkins Trial Begins This Week

Written by on June 19, 2018

A jury trial is underway for a former Cody psychiatrist accused of driving under the influence of inhalants.
Dr. Matt Hopkins is facing a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor charge of driving while under the influence of a controlled substance. The charges stem from a head on crash last March, in which he caused a collision on 8th Street by allegedly getting high off of compressed air and passing out. The driver of the other vehicle was hospitalized for injuries received in the crash.
A jury trial for those charges began in District Court yesterday – but it’s just one incident that the troubled doctor has been involved in over the last year and a half. Hopkins was charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident in November of 2016. And in July of last year, Hopkins was jailed for violating probation orders after crashing his bicycle while under the influence of alcohol.
Hopkins had been a practicing psychiatrist in Park County for over ten years until the time of his arrest, specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry and other focuses, including addiction.
