How Do You Stay Motivated?
Written by Wendy Corr on April 2, 2019
How often do you get started with enthusiasm for a healthy plan, only to find yourself losing interest after just a few days or weeks? What you’re lacking is MOTIVATION. I’m Wendy Corr, and I’ve got several tips on how you can keep yourself interested and moving forward on your healthy journey!
I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve fallen short of my healthy goals. Heck, I’m STILL not at my goals for weight and fitness, and I’ve been on this journey for years! I’m so, so close… but some days I just can’t make it stick. I’m sure many of you can relate! So how do I plow through when I just don’t feel like making healthy choices? Here are several things that I tell my nutrition clients when things get tough:
First, write down your WHY! Put it on colored sticky notes and leave yourself messages wherever you need them most. Your mirror, the refrigerator door, the dashboard of your car – wherever you have the most weakness, that’s when you need reminded of WHY you’re trying to make these changes!
Second, control your environment. It’s hard to eat healthy when you’ve got chips or cookies in the cupboard just calling your name in a moment of weakness. When you only have healthy food available, you’re less likely to snack on junk. And that goes for our kids, too – we want them to live long, healthy lives, right? It won’t hurt them to go without that ice cream or pretzels – fresh fruits and raw, unsalted nuts will satisfy a sweet tooth or crunch craving, and you won’t regret that bite.
Celebrating non-scale victories is essential to keep yourself motivated. So you didn’t lose a pound this week… but you were able to zip up those jeans that you couldn’t get over your hips last month! Treat yourself to a non-food reward, like a pedicure or some quiet time without the kids.
And most importantly, have a support system. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, who will cheer you on when you’re doing great and who will pick you up when you’ve stumbled. Because it is inevitable – we all fall short sometimes. It’s in that forgiveness of our own failings that we will find strength to go forward towards our goals!
