How to Beat Cold and Flu Season

Written by on November 1, 2017

It’s that time of year, when colds and flu start making the rounds. It seems inevitable that our families will be hit with some sort of illness each winter… or is it? I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s wellness tip, I’ll point you towards ways you can help boost your immune system and stay well all winter long!
The idea of boosting your immunity is attractive to us all – but we often find ourselves falling short for several reasons. Primarily, it’s because the immune system is so extensive, and utilizes many different organs and systems in our bodies – so it requires balance and harmony.
Researchers are exploring the effects of diet, exercise, age, psychological stress, and other factors on how well we fight off illness – but everyone can agree that general healthy-living strategies are a good way to start giving your immune system the upper hand.
So how do you help your body fight off those nasty seasonal bugs? Here are a few tips:
First, and obviously, don’t smoke, or be around second hand smoke. There is increasing evidence that cigarette smoke suppresses the immune system.
Second, eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables. The phytonutrients, antioxidants, fibers, oils and acids in fruits and vegetables are used by the body to directly combat inflammation and infections and also support detoxification and immune cell function.
Exercising regularly also helps to boost your immune response. Physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, which can reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.
Sleep is essential. Researchers have found that one of the consequences of sleep deprivation is a weakening of the immune system, which leaves us less protected when the next bug comes along.
Then there’s basic hygiene. Washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly are simple ways to keep the bad bugs at bay.
