A historic lookout in Yellowstone has burned to the ground.
Lightning struck the Mount Holmes Fire Lookout southwest of Mammoth Hot Springs Tuesday afternoon. The fire was spotted by the employee who staffs the Mount Washburn Fire Lookout in the late afternoon.
As of today, the Mount Holmes Trail west of the junction with the Trilobite Lake Trail and the summit of Mount Holmes are closed. Park Officials say the fire also damaged a Park radio repeater.
The lookout was built in 1931 and renovated in 1998. The building had been eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places.M
