The Wyoming Game and Fish Department captured a mountain lion in a residential area of Cody on Monday.
Game and Fish received a report of a dead deer fawn that was half-buried in the back yard of a home on Park Avenue on Monday morning, according to the department’s Large Carnivore Biologist, Luke Ellsbury. An investigation also turned up the partially consumed body of a housecat.
A young female mountain lion was trapped at the residence, then Game and Fish transported the animal to Lander for further investigation. Once the animal was immobilized and examined, it was evident she was severely emaciated with a heavy case of scours, and it was decided to euthanize the animal. A full necropsy will be performed at the Wyoming Game and Fish Wildlife Health Laboratory in Laramie.
Ellsbury says there are no indications that another mountain lion was still around, but Game and Fish were going to continue to monitor the area.
Department officials called the incident “an unfortunate circumstance of nature,” and expressed their appreciation for the public’s involvement in reporting the incident so they could respond promptly.
