Mountain Lion Killed Near Powell

Written by on September 6, 2018

Some residents south of Powell Tuesday were taken aback when they spotted a mountain lion roaming the area.
Dan Smith, regional wildlife supervisor with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in Cody, says that the animal was reported to Game and Fish early Tuesday morning, near Road 9 about a mile south of Powell. But he said shortly after the report, a licensed hunter shot the animal in a legal hunt area.
Smith points out that while it’s not unheard of to have a mountain lion this close to town, it’s not a usual occurrence. He says that this is just the 4th mountain lion to be spotted near Powell in the last 13 years.

Smith says that the big cat was harvested in a hunt area that is open year-round, and closes only when the mortality limit is reached. In this case, Smith says that the season runs from September 1st through August 31st, and this is just the first mountain lion that has been killed this season in that hunt area.
