Peace Officers Memorial Day Today

Written by on May 15, 2017

If you’re wondering why flags are at half staff at government buildings in the area, today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Sunday, May 14th through Saturday, May 20th has been designated as National Police Week. At the last City Council Meeting, Cody Police Chief Chuck Baker noted that he has issued an administrative order directing on-duty officers to shroud their badge for the 24 hour period today in honor of the 145 law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2016, and 47 officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to us all so far this year.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, paying special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
