Pickleball Court Planned at Dorse Miller Park

Written by on June 1, 2018

Pickleball is a sport that is taking Cody by storm – so plans are underway for the construction of an outdoor pickleball court.
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. Two or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated plastic ball, similar to a Whiffle Ball, over a net.
The Cody Rec Center is Pickleball central on weekday mornings, where teams can be found playing from 6 a.m. to 10 on some days. But the sport has become so popular that a group of enthusiasts appealed to the City Council to allow for construction of an outdoor court.
City Parks and Recreation Director Rick Manchester says the new courts will be constructed next to the tennis court at Dorse Miller park, although originally the Council had authorized transforming that facility into the pickleball courts.

According to Manchester, a quote has come in from a company in St. George for about $250,000, and he says the project is now in fundraising mode, which is being led by the Cody Rec Foundation.
He adds that construction can begin as early as this fall, and it should take about 90 days.
