If you’re like me, you may have days where you find yourself just plain eating too much. Whether it’s healthy food or junk, overeating can be dangerous! And not just for your waistline. I’m Wendy Corr, with today’s wellness tip.
Most people find themselves in situations from time to time where they just can’t stop eating! Maybe you’re at a holiday dinner, maybe you’ve gotten a hold of your favorite sweet treat, or maybe you find yourself just mindless snacking in the evening while watching TV – but no matter the circumstances, overeating can definitely be a detriment to your health.
Want some good reasons to implement portion control? Well, you save money, because you’ll probably be eating less. Your stomach may shrink, because you’re eating less at a sitting, so you’re likely to be less hungry as time goes on – and you’ll feel full faster. Additionally, your body doesn’t have to work as hard to digest large amounts of food, so you’ll have fewer tummy aches.
Another benefit of portion control is steadier blood sugar – that means fewer sugar rushes and energy crashes! And a big benefit for most people is that you’ll find it easier to maintain a healthy weight.
So how do you start? Well, many people find great success when they weigh and measure their food, but that takes quite a bit of work and planning. So here are a few shortcuts – buy and use smaller plates and bowls to trick your mind into thinking you’re eating more; keep foods that trigger overeating, like chips, pretzels, cookies and the like, out of sight – or better yet, out of your house! And learn some basic portion comparisons – for most people a cup is about the same size as your fist or a tennis ball; a tsp is the tip of your thumb; a serving of meat would be the size of a deck of cards. Find out how many servings of each food group you should have for your body type and size, then choose your foods accordingly!
