Prescribed Burns on Chief Joseph

Written by on April 19, 2019

The Shoshone National Forest is planning to conduct two prescribed fires this week along the Chief Joseph Highway.

One of the burns will be at the intersection of the Chief Joseph Highway and the Beartooth Highway, and the other is at the Dead Indian Summit. Burning should take place between 10am and 4pm.

Prescribed fires are often used by forest officials to help reduce the catastrophic damage of wildfire on our lands and surrounding communities. The action safely reduces excessive amounts of brush, shrubs and trees, encourages the new growth of native vegetation, and maintains the many plant and animal species whose habitats depend on periodic fire.
