Progress – Not Perfection!

Written by on April 19, 2019

So often on our healthy journey we go completely off track when we have a bump in our path. But it’s important to realize that with any health goals, progress, not perfection, is the rule! I’m Wendy Corr, with your Daily Wellness Tip.

Trying to achieve perfection with any goal will only set you up for failure. But if you build in allowances for setbacks and forgive yourself for being human, you’ll reach your goal before you know it!

Perfectionism can actually slow you down. When you focus too tightly on details, it takes your energy away from the larger picture, and can cause stress that will actually hinder your progress. Also, you’re not as open to new paths and fresh ideas that may work better for you as you progress.

We’re all human – and when we set high expectations for ourselves, then fail to meet a step at the exact time we expect we should reach it, it leads to self-criticism. You find yourself battling with your own mind, putting yourself down and creating a sense that you’ll never have the ability to reach your overall goal.

But when you focus on progress, the path is much more enjoyable! When you look back at how far you’ve come, you can feel empowered. When the going gets tough, reminding yourself of your past successes can move you forward. Also, reflecting on what you HAVE accomplished reinforces your own sense of strength, proving that you CAN make the changes necessary to reach your goals!

Setting up short term rewards can make progress more fun – treat yourself whenever you reach a small milestone! It gives you something to look forward to and motivation to continue.

I am a firm believer in the idea that there is no such thing as failure – you either succeed, or you learn. And when you take stock of the times that you’ve fallen short, when you examine those mistakes or those losses, you can incorporate what you’ve learned to the next step on your journey. Now THAT’S progress!
