State of Cody Athletics

Written by on March 16, 2020

DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS THE WHSAA HAVE EXTENDED THE SUSPENSION OF ALL ACTIVITIES UNTIL MONDAY, APRIL 6TH. THEIR WILL BE NO PRACTICES DURING THE SUSPENSION. MONDAY EVENING I SAT DOWN WITH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF CODY HIGH SCHOOL, TONY HULT, TO DISCUSS THE STATE OF CODY ATHLETICS. HE SAYS HE’S HOPEFUL ACTIVITIES WILL RESUME SOMETIME IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.

“I’D HOPE THAT WE COULD GET A TRACK AND SOCCER SEASON TOGETHER. IT’S A SHORTENED SEASON, ANYHOW, FOR TENNIS AND GOLF BUT I’D HOPE THAT WOULD HAPPEN. I WOULD BE AFRAID THAT IF THIS LAST’S LONGER AND WE GET DOWN THE ROAD A COUPLE MORE WEEKS AND THE GOVERNMENT, OR THOSE PEOPLE IN POWER, THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT THAT’S IN CHARGE, SAYS WE’VE GOT TO GO A COUPLE MORE WEEKS, I’D HAVE A TOUGH TIME BELIEVING WE COULD GET TO LATER IN APRIL AND BE ABLE TO SALVAGE ANYTHING.”

FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR THIS IS THE LAST TIME THAT THEY MAY PLAY SPORTS AT A HIGH LEVEL. MR. HULT ON HOW CODY HIGH SCHOOL IS APPROACHING THAT CLASS.

“I’VE HEARD THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU DO IN SCHOOL IS TO GRADUATE YOUR KIDS. SO I KNOW RIGHT NOW OUR SENIORS IN SCHOOL, WE WANT TO GET THEM GRADUATED AND GET THEM MOVING ON. YOU DON’T WANT TO CHANGE THAT. SO HOW DO YOU FIT IN EVERYTHING THAT YOU NEED TO FIT IN? THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF PIECES TO THIS PUZZLE. WE’RE GOING TO DO EVERYTHING WE CAN, AS LONG AS IT’S UNDER THE GUIDELINES OF WHAT EVERYBODY IS SAYING WE SHOULD DO.”

MR. HULT GOES ON TO TALK ABOUT THE BALANCE OF STAYING IN SHAPE FOR A POSSIBLE SPRING SPORT SEASON AND STAYING SAFE.

“THE ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION ACTUALLY DID THAT. THEY ENCOURAGED OUR KIDS TO TRY TO STAY IN SHAPE AND DO THINGS. THEY CAN CERTAINLY USE OUR TRACK. WE DON’T WANT THEM TO BE IN LARGE GROUPS. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE LENIENT THAN THE INDOOR STUFF, BUT WE DON’T WANT ALL OF OUR KIDS TO GET TOGETHER, 50 OF THEM, AND PRACTICE. IF ONE OR TWO OF THEM WANT TO GO AND GET TOGETHER AND STAY IN SHAPE, CERTAINLY WE ARE ENCOURAGING THAT AND WANT THEM TO DO THAT. WE ALSO WANT THEM TO STAY AT HOME AS MOST THEY CAN AND DO ALL THE THINGS THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS TELLING US TO DO.”

TONIGHT, THEIR WILL BE A SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AT 6PM THAT SHOULD PROVIDE MORE CLARITY TO THE PUBLIC AND WHAT THE NEXT STEPS ARE GOING FORWARD.

“PEOPLE CAN WATCH IT ONLINE. THEY JUST GO ON OUR WEBSITE, ON THE PARK 6 WEBSITE, TO CONNECT TO IT. I DON’T THINK THEY WANT A BUNCH OF PEOPLE THERE CAUSE THEY’RE TRYING TO KEEP THE LARGE MEETINGS AWAY. OBVIOUSLY, IF PEOPLE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR WANT TO DO ANYTHING THEY CAN CALL OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT CAUSE WE’RE STILL, ALL OF OUR PEOPLE ARE STILL MANNING THOSE PHONES SO THEY CAN TALK AND SAY ‘HEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS.’ I THINK THE NEXT WEEK’S REALLY IMPORTANT TO SEE WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN THE REST OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.”

STAY TUNED TO THE BIG HORN RADIO NETWORK FOR FURTHER UPDATE ON CODY ATHLETICS. THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH TONY HULT IS LISTED BELOW.
