Staying Healthy While You Travel

Written by on February 9, 2018

Often we’re tempted to let our health go while we’re out of town – and we make food and lifestyle choices that could negatively impact everything from your digestion to getting a good night’s sleep – and that could take away from your enjoyment of your vacation or business trip. I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, I’ll help guide you in ways you can stay healthy while you’re traveling!
How often have you planned a trip with the best of intentions to stick to your food and exercise plan, then forego that plan when you’re faced with temptation to eat sweet or fried foods, or drink excess amounts of alcohol? Often when that happens, the next day, your digestion is off, you’re groggy or overly tired, and you don’t have near as much fun because you just feel off.
To counter this effect, here are a few tips that will help make your trip more enjoyable, and without regrets!
First, you’ll need to plan to get lots of SLEEP! Your body needs rest when you’re traveling, crossing time zones, carrying luggage, walking all day – so treat yourself to a nap, and sleep in whenever possible!
Exercise is really important. If you have a full day ahead, dedicate time to stretching first thing in the morning. You’ll feel more refreshed and ready to face the day! And remember, when you exercise, you’re actually increasing your energy for the day.
Often the hardest part about staying healthy while on vacation is food. A few simple rules will keep you on track, and they’re easy to follow! First, don’t fall for the pastries at the continental breakfast – that will surely set you up for a blood sugar rush and crash! Complex carbohydrates and protein are your best bets.
And don’t fool yourself into thinking that you have to indulge in foods that are extra rich or super sweet, just because you’re away from home. Remind yourself that when you go to a nice restaurant, the entrees and sides can be just as delicious, and fruit or a square of dark chocolate for dessert is super satisfying!
And on the same vein as food, make sure you are hydrated! Your body will thank you- but limit the alcohol and sweet drinks. Both of those will dehydrate you, and if you over indulge on alcohol, you may regret it the next day!
I hope you’ve found these tips helpful – so the next time you’re away from home, you can stay healthy and truly enjoy yourself!
