Two Area Churches Burglarized

Written by on October 20, 2017

Two Park County churches have been burglarized in separate incidents in the last month.
Deputies from the Park County Sheriff’s office responded to a report of a stolen safe on Monday, September 18, at the Cody Missionary Alliance Church on East Cooper Lane in Cody. According to Lance Mathess with the Sheriff’s office, administrative staff discovered the safe missing upon reporting for work. The safe contained cash and checks received at church services the day before.
Mathess says there was no sign of a forced entry and no apparent damage to the interior or exterior of the church, and the stolen safe was subsequently recovered this past Sunday, October 15th, in the area of the solar panel array near the Willwood Dam.
In a separate incident, St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Meeteetse was burglarized as well as vandalized this Sunday. Mathess says the suspects forced their way into the church and stole several church artifacts. They then caused extensive damage to the interior of the church.
Mathess says that despite the rural setting of our small communities, churches should still be vigilant when it comes to security.

At this time, Mathess says deputies do not believe these incidents to be related. Both burglaries are still under investigation.
