War Dog Memorial to be Unveiled in May

Written by on February 1, 2019

A monument honoring canine war heroes will soon be unveiled in Cody.

The War Dog Memorial has been a project that has taken slow steps forward for the last few years. But the Veteran’s Memorial Park Foundation Board has announced the dedication of the statue, carved by artist John Phelps of Cody, in a ceremony planned for the 18th of May.

The sculpture depicts a soldier and his German Shepherd companion, in full battle gear. Surrounding the statue will be paving stones purchased by supporters of the park to honor service members, including the war dogs who have served faithfully at the sides of their human partners.

Warren Cheney, chairman of the Foundation’s Board, says that the statue is almost complete.

Jona Vanata, who is also on the board, says the sculptor has been keeping the board involved in the process from the beginning.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for May 18th at noon, and will also be featured at the annual Memorial Day service at noon on May 27th.
