WYDOT Crack Sealing Near Montana State Line This Month

WYDOT Crack Sealing Near Montana State Line This Month

Written by on April 12, 2022

Cody residents will find themselves slowing down while traveling north of town, as WYDOT breaks out the orange cones for a short but important project.

This week, W.Y.D.O.T. will resume crack sealing north of Cody on Wyoming Highway 120. The sealing will occur near the Montana state line between mileposts 118.5 and 137.53.

Z&Z Seal Coating of Billings won the $399,000 contract to repair highway cracks in Big Horn and Park counties.

“Motorists should expect traffic delays of up to 20 minutes during crack sealing operations,” said Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Michael Miller of Basin. “Please slow down so work crews can safely complete this important road maintenance work.”

This will be one of the few roadwork projects W.Y.D.O.T. is planning for the Cody region this 2022, with the largest beginning near Yellowstone this summer.

W.Y.D.O.T.  is planning a Pavement Rehabilitation Project for Summer 2022. Nearly 11 miles of the North Fork Highway will be repaved – along with other roadside improvements – for the first time in two decades.

Overall, the project will consist of a two-inch hot plant mix overlay and chip seal on a 10.7-mile section of U.S. Highway 14/16/20. This project will be much like the work W.Y.D.O.T. did on WY Highway 20 last summer. There will also be some shoulder flattening, guardrail repair, pipe work, and rototilling of the existing surfacing.

Work will be located between the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and the Fishhawk Trailhead from May 1 to August 31, 2022.

Yellowstone tourists and Park County locals can expect up to 20-minute delays from the beginning of May to the end of August.

The original reconstruction project of U.S. 14/16/20 was completed in October 1997. W.Y.D.O.T. hoped to get 20 years of life from the original pavement. And they got nearly 25 years.

W.Y.D.O.T. moved this project up in its schedule due to available funding and deterioration of the existing pavement.

Like the W.Y.D.O.T. project on Sheridan Avenue, any contractor must abide by specific parameters for the roadwork. No pavement rehabilitation work can start until May 1, and all work (except seeding) must be completed by Aug. 31, 2022.

Meanwhile, the contract completion date for the crack sealing on WY 120 is April 30.
