WYDOT Roadwork Near Yellowstone’s East Entrance Begins May 2
Written by Andrew-Rossi on April 26, 2022
W.Y.D.O.T. will begin over ten miles of road improvements between the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park and the Fishhawk Trailhead on May 2.
The 10.25 miles of US14/16/20 directly east of the East Entrance to Yellowstone National Park will receive pavement improvements and other work beginning May 2.
The $5.4 million project will consist of rotomilling of the existing pavement surface, a two-inch pavement overlay, chip sealing, minor slope flattening, guardrail repair, and other work.
The project is located between milepost 0.00 (Yellowstone’s East Entrance) and extends east 10.25 miles to milepost 10.25 (the Fishhawk Trailhead) in Shoshone National Forest.
“The contractor is tentatively scheduled to begin work on May 2 with the guardrail repairs,” said Wyoming Department of Transportation resident engineer Todd Frost of Cody. “Shoulder flattening and paving are tentatively scheduled for mid-June, depending on the weather. Chip sealing will follow.”
Drivers can expect delays of up to 20 minutes in the construction zone between early May and late August.
“Motorists should expect a paved driving surface and minimal delays during the guardrail work. However, during shoulder flattening, paving, and chip sealing, motorists should expect traffic delays of up to 20 minutes,” Frost said. “Traffic will be controlled with flaggers and a pilot vehicle during this work.”
Like the W.Y.D.O.T. project on Sheridan Avenue, any contractor must abide by specific parameters for the roadwork. Furthermore, W.Y.D.O.T. requires unrestricted traffic and no work at several points during the summer.
- Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 28 to Monday, May 30)
- Independence Day weekend (Thursday, June 30 to Tuesday, July 5)
- Labor Day weekend (Saturday, Sept. 3 to Monday, Sept. 5)
W.Y.D.O.T. is not allowing any work or delays over Independence Day weekend.
All work, except reclamation, must be complete by Aug. 31.
Mountain Construction Company of Lovell is the prime contractor for the project. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2022.
This section of US14/16/20 was originally constructed in 1996-97.
“Normal service life for pavement is approximately 20 years before it needs rehabilitation and an overlay,” Frost said.
