Wyoming Republicans to US Senators: Absolutely No Gun Reform

Written by on June 22, 2022

A Park County representative is among a group of Wyoming Republicans who want Senators Barrasso and Lummis to reject any gun reform bill that reaches the U.S. Senate floor.

Language for a potential bipartisan gun reform bill has been released. Some semblance of this bill could reach the U.S. Senate floor – and may even pass.

Already, the bill has made waves in U.S. politics. In May, Wyoming Senator Cynthia Lummis said she was “open to suggestions” on gun reform after the tragic massacre in Uvalde, Texas (she has since adamantly reaffirmed her commitment to the Second Amendment.)

Because of this, the Freedom Caucus of the Wyoming House of Representatives sent a letter to both of Wyoming’s U.S. senators. All the Wyoming representatives see it as the senators’ duty to reject the “Biden/Pelosi gun control agenda.”

The letter’s sentiment is clear: any gun bill infringes on the constitutional rights of Wyomingites.

The full letter is below.

Dear Senator John Barrasso and Senator Cynthia Lummis,

We, the members of the Wyoming House Freedom Caucus, implore you to vote “NO” on any proposed gun control or red flag gun confiscation bill. These bills are an attempt to take away our constitutional rights, guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. This type of democrat-proposed legislation attacks law-abiding citizens.

As an example of a serious way to protect Wyoming schools, Wyoming’s current law allows school districts to decide whether they want to create a policy that allows their staff to conceal carry. Existing school district policies require approved staff to participate and pass rigorous training.

The Second Amendment, which we all swore to defend, states that “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. Government has a propensity to erode our liberties under a false flag of safety. One impediment to the natural progression from a constitutional republic to despotism is the fact that the people of America are armed. Thomas Jefferson famously said, “The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves from tyranny in government.” And yet here our own government is attempting to take this right away from millions of law-abiding citizens.

The fact is, the Second Amendment serves to maintain the rights guaranteed to the people in the remainder of the Bill of Rights.

It is clear from our country’s history that those who will obey the laws of this land will do so while armed. Yet, those who will perpetrate evil will do so with or without arms and when the prior are armed, the latter are meeker. Gun control legislation will not and cannot protect our school children.

We ask that you make efforts to introduce, co-sponsor, and support strong legislation that will strengthen school security so that they are no longer an easy target for these senseless actions of a few deranged individuals. We ask that our congressional delegation fight against Pelosi’s radical gun control agenda.

Gun control is nothing but an attempt to make criminals out of law-abiding Americans!

The letter is signed by twelve Wyoming representatives, all members of the Freedom Caucus:

  • John Bear, House – District 31
  • Rachel Rodriguez-Williams – House District 50
