The television show, “Yellowstone,” starring mega-movie mogul Kevin Costner, became a break-out hit when it debuted on the streaming platform Paramount Network in 2018.
As far as a series being “successful” in the entertainment industry, there are a few time-tested, agreed-upon metrics. Obviously, ratings, downloads or streams are the most commonly-used barometer of a television’s success. Money speaks in loud volumes when it comes to the success or failure of a television series as advertising revenue or how much the show can charge for advertising is another measure. These are standard, bottom-line measures of success by Hollywood’s time-tested metrics. But there is also another phenomenon that, although not as tangible and can be mercurial and elusive, but is still a measure of how successful a television series is, and that’s its influence on popular culture.
When a show’s catch-phrase, theme song or fashion trends start showing up in real life, that is also an acceptable gauge of success.
Yellowstone, as a show and an influencer on our pop culture, has affected fashion, where people go on vacations, and now, according the Social Security Administration, baby names.
The top baby names in the U.S. for 2022 was recently released by the Social Security Administration and the results show, that 3.64 million babies in America were issued Social Security cards last year, which is slightly up from 2021. The agency tracks baby names in each state based on applications for Social Security cards, with names dating all the back to 1880.

How the series ‘Yellowstone’ is influencing new parents
The surname of the Kevin Costner’s character and his family, “Dutton,” moved up the Social Security list to 835, a change of 986 spots from 2021 and is the fastest rising name in the Social Security rankings.
Kayce, as in Kayce John Dutton on the show, moved to the 587th most popular name, up from 1,077 the year before. Luke Grimes plays Kayce.
Rip, also from “Yellowstone,” has grabbed some naming attention, but it didn’t crack Social Security’s top 1,000. Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler is Dutton-adjacent as the son-in-law of John.
