Yellowstone’s Winter Season Opens
Written by Andrew-Rossi on December 13, 2019
It’s officially winter – in Yellowstone, at least.
Yellowstone has announced that December 15th will be the first day of the 2019-2020 Winter Season. This means that roads are now open to commercially-guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches. The North, West, and South Entrances will be ready for snow traffic on the 15th. Over-snow travel from the East Entrance will come a few days later on the 22nd.
It takes extra levels of planning for a Yellowstone Winter Trip. Lodging and dining options are – if you can believe it – even more limited in winter than in summer. Unexpected road closures and delays can occur without warning. And you need special permits if you’re planning a private snowmobile excursion. But none of these are new to dedicated Wyomingites.
Yellowstone was under a Winter Storm Warning yesterday. Not unusual for this time of year, but definitely a reminder of the inherent hazards of a visit to our greatest Winter Wonderland.
