Behind Solid Pitching/Hot Hitting, Cody Downs Lovell
Written by Cole Havens on June 11, 2020
JACKSON SCHROEDER AND TYLER GRENZ COMBINED TO PITCH 12 INNINGS, ALLOWED 4 TOTAL HITS, 2 RUNS AND HAD 13 STRIKE OUTS AS THE CODY CUBS SWEPT LOVELL WEDNESDAY NIGHT FOR THEIR FIRST TWO CONFERENCE WINS OF THE SEASON.
AFTER THE GAMES COACH GRENZ TALKED ABOUT THE PITCHING PERFORMANCE.
“YOU KNOW I THINK OUR PITCHING IS SETTLING IN. WE DIDN’T GET A TON OF WORK DURING THE OFF-SEASON OR LEADING UP TO OUR FIRST GAMES AND I THINK WHAT YOU’RE SEEING IS OUR PITCHERS ARE STARTING TO SETTLE IN. THEY’RE THROWING IT LIKE WE THOUGHT THEY WOULD. TYLER AND JACK BOTH DID A GREAT JOB TONIGHT. WE THOUGHT THEY WERE VERY AGGRESSIVE GOING AFTER HITTERS AND WE THOUGH DEVYN ENGDAHL CALLED A GREAT GAME BEHIND THE PLATE.”
IN THE FIRST GAME OF THE NIGHT SCHROEDER WENT THE FULL 7 INNINGS PITCHED, THE FIRST TIME A CODY PITCHER WENT A COMPLETE GAME AND THE CUBS SCORED 6 RUNS IN GAME 1 TO DEFEAT THE MUSTANGS 6-1. TRISTAN BLATT CONTINUED HIS HOT HITTING WITH TWO TRIPLES IN THE GAME AND SCORED ONE RUN WHILE BATTING IN ONE.
IN GAME TWO, TYLER GRENZ ALLOWED ONE RUN EARLY IN THE SECOND INNING BUT SETTLED DOWN ALLOWING JUST TWO TOTAL HITS AS THE CUBS 10-RUN RULED THE MUSTANGS IN THE SECOND GAME, WINNING 16-1. THE STORY OF THE SECOND GAME WAS THE CUBS OFFENSE SENDING 10 BATTERS TO THE PLATE IN THREE STRAIGHT INNINGS. ETHAN JOHNSTON AFTER A TWO OUT, TWO RBI DOUBLE IN GAME ONE, WAS 1-1 IN GAME TWO WITH FOUR RBI’S.
COACH GRENZ ALSO TALKS ABOUT WHAT WORKED AT THE PLATE.
“YEAH, WE’RE SWINGING IT PRETTY WELL RIGHT NOW. I THINK LAST WEEKEND WE WERE TOO. WE PUT UP 11 RUNS IN TWO LOSSES. THAT’S A PRETTY GOOD CLIP, YOU SHOULD WIN THOSE GAMES. I THINK TONIGHT WE JUST KIND OF CARRIED OVER FROM THAT. OUR KIDS ARE SEEING THE BALL WELL, THEY’RE SWINGING IT WELL. THEY’RE MAKING ADJUSTMENTS AND BASEBALL IS A GAME THAT HAS TO BE PLAYED SO THE KIDS KNOW WHAT ADJUSTMENTS TO MAKE. I THINK WHAT WE DID LAST WEEKEND PAYED OFF TONIGHT.”
WITH THE WINS THE CODY CUBS IMPROVE TO 4-5 ON THE SEASON, 2-0 IN CONFERENCE PLAY.
UP NEXT: THEY TRAVEL TO THREE FORKS, MONTANA ON SATURDAY FOR GAMES VS. BITTEROOT AND GALLATIN VALLEY, AT 2:30 AND 5PM. THEY RETURN HOME TO HOST SHERIDAN SUNDAY FOR A DOUBLE HEADER BEGINNING AT 1PM.
