Fillies Sweep Evanston, Green River: Broncs Split the Weekend

Written by on February 14, 2022

The Cody Broncs and Fillies basketball team were in action over the weekend taking part in their

longest road trip, heading to Evanston and Green River.

The Fillies would sweep the weekend, defeating Evanston on Friday by a final of 45-28 and knocked

off Green River by a final of 51-45.

The Broncs would split the weekend, defeating Evanston on Friday by a final of 74-44 but fell to Green River on Saturday 57-29.

Let’s take a look at each of these contests.

Friday nights game, for the Fillies, against Evanston was a classic grind-it-out performance. The Fillies had to fight for each point in this one as their shot was not falling. They made just nine shots outside the painted area in the contest. It was a tough hard fought win.

The Fillies are used to jumping on their opponents early but it was the Lady Red Devils who held the 10-5 advantage after one quarter. In the second, the Fillies would get things going, opening up the frame on a 12-0 run and held a 19-15 halftime advantage.

As always, the Fillies defense was stifling forcing Evanston to turn it over 25 plus times in the game and Cody would use a strong second half to pull away for the 45-28 victory.

Molly Hays led the way with 15 points, only Filly in double figures, in the contest.

As for the Broncs, on Friday, they took it to Evanston in their best all-around effort this year.

Luke Talich and Wilkins Radakovich combined to score the first 16 points of the game and helped the team build a 31-21 halftime advantage.

The Broncs erupted in the third quarter and put their stamp on the game in that frame. They doubled their score, dropping in 31 points in the 3rd frame, scoring the quarters first seven points and never looked back. This was a contest where every player dressed saw playing time.

Four Broncs scored in double figures, led by Talich who had 21. Robby Porter had 16, all in the second half. Grady McCarten dropped in 13 and Radakovich had 11.

Ads for Saturday’s contests vs. Green River.

Starting things off with the Fillies who put together an excellent performance on the day. This might’ve been the best on-ball defense the Fillies played all season.

It was a back-and-forth opening frame with the Lady Wovles holding a slight edge 12-11 after one period of play.

The second quarter was prototypical Filly basketball. They held Green River to just four points in the frame and built a 23-16 lead at the intermission. At the halftime break, Green River’s leading scorer, Megan Counts had zero points. She’s averaging nearly 16 a game.

Counts would find her stride in the thrid quarter, however, knocking in back-to-back three’s. The Fillies settled down after that initial 6-point storm and led 32-28 after three.

Kennedi Niemann would take over in the fourth quarter, put the Fillies on her back and said, ‘I got this.’ Niemann dropped in 11 of her game high 19 in the final frame, breaking away for layups, driving the lane and hitting clutch free throws to put the game away. Green River’s Daryn Macy did hit a couple of late 3-pointers, one from the logo, but it wasn’t enough as the Fillies held on for an impressive win.

In the second game, on Saturday, it was not meant to be as the Broncs were stymied all game long by a quality Green River Squad. The Wolves led 10-4 after one and built a 25-12 halftime advantage.

There was plenty of chippiness in the third quarter as Green River’s bench was given a technical foul but that just energized them more as Dylan Taylor’s 26 points carried them to the victory.

Following the weekends action the Fillies are now 16-0 on the season with the Broncs 5-11.

It’s hard to believe but each Cody Basketball team only has three games remaining on the season.
