Filly Volleyball Back in Action

This weekend is a cornucopia for High School Sports competition. And for you Cody High School fans all the Broncs and Fillies sports teams will be in action. The Fillies Volleyball team opens up their regular season at home this Friday and Saturday. Following a couple weeks of practice I caught up once again with Head Coach Stephanie Birch and she talks about the improvement of this team from the end of last year to now.

“You know, our chemistry for it just being halfway through week 2 is better than towards the end of last season. So it’s kind of like how we stopped, we picked up and are even better. I think it’s due to everybody showing up this summer and already having those relationships built, already knowing the expectations but our chemistry is really good.”

The Fillies open the season Friday vs. Shoshoni and take on Lander at home Saturday. Coach Birch on what they’re working on heading into the first match-ups.

“To get rid of those first game jitters, to open up at home. We should actually be in Riverton playing seven games in an overnight tournament but due to the circumstances we’re already home. And to get used to playing in this environment and under these new guidelines and just competing.”

Defense has already been highlighted as a big emphasis for the Fillies to be successful but one other thing coach Birch wants to see just how they respond to game action.

“We watch a lot of film and we can critique off that and look and make sure, are we in the right spots, how is our technique. How are those kind of things to be able to evaluate more so than just what the scoreboard says.”

And Coach Birch adds to how thrilled this team is to just get back out on the floor and compete.

“You can feel it. You can feel that it’s building up to a real game. I mean, these kids, their season got cut short extremely this spring. So they haven’t competed in a real game for a long time and they are so excited to get out and showcase some of those things they’ve been working on.”

The Cody Fillies Volleyball team gets their 2020 campaign underway today/Friday hosting Shoshoni at 5pm. The Fillies are back home hosting Lander Saturday at 1 in the afternoon. Stay tuned for results.
