Strength Training Contributes to Better Health

When we think of weight loss, the first place we start is with the foods that we eat. But that’s not the only component to getting healthy – exercise is a huge part of your success. I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, we’ll talk about the different ways strength is essential to your health.

Our bodies were MADE TO MOVE. Sitting for too long or living a sedentary lifestyle contributes to body aches and pains, digestive issues, and even disability.

And while many fitness professionals focus on cardio workouts as the answer, strength training is equally, if not more important, for your long-term health.

Sadly, many dieticians and nutritionists don’t really understand strength training, which leads to a lot of misinformation.

Why is strength training important for losing weight? Because a lot of people try to starve themselves into weight loss. They think that if they burn more calories in cardiovascular exercise, and then they eat fewer calories, they’ll lose weight. But It’s your lean body mass, that muscle mass underneath your body fat, that revs up your metabolism 24/7. And strength training works to build that lean muscle.

Many people are scared off by the term “strength-training” – they believe they’ll have to lift a bunch of barbells – or that they will end up looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

But that’s not the case! You can use resistance bands, weight machines, or even your own body weight to cause your muscles to get stronger, increasing fat burn and changing your fat to muscle ratio.

When you incorporate simple resistance exercises like squats, pushups, using medicine balls or even light dumbbells, you’ll find health benefits like better flexibility and balance, improved muscle tone, increased bone density, and even a reduction in cognitive decline.

So if you’d like to look better, feel better, and live a longer, healthier life, consider adding strength training to your routine!
