Take Small Steps to Make Big Changes
Written by Wendy Corr on February 21, 2019
When changes to our lifestyle become necessary, it can seem overwhelming to contemplate where to start. When we have deeply ingrained habits and routines, it’s a daunting task to figure out how to make those healthy changes. I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, I’ll give you some small steps to make big changes.
All too often in our society, a health crisis for ourselves or a member of our family causes us to examine the choices that we’ve made that have brought us to this illness. The good news is, through simple changes, we can help to protect ourselves against these lifestyle diseases and improve our chances of living a long, healthy life!
The trick is to make changes one step at a time. Once we adjust to one small change and it becomes a normal part of our routine, then we can move on to the next! That way we don’t feel like we’re depriving ourselves of anything. In a year, we can have a totally different lifestyle!
How to do it? For starters, we take small steps. For example, instead of cutting out sugar cold turkey, just cut out soda. Then, when that becomes habit, move on to candy or donuts.
But make sure to replace bad food with healthy food that you enjoy! So instead of the soda, you have water with lemon. And instead of donuts, you have an apple.
Slip some veggies into your dinner. Cut out a less healthy side dish and scoop more green beans onto your plate. And instead of potato chips or pretzels, try unsalted nuts like almonds or walnuts.
And if you eat white bread or bagels, replace them with whole grain versions. The same with breakfast cereals – replace your sugar pops with old fashioned oatmeal and some honey.
Regular dairy milk has very little health benefit – replacing your 2% with unsweetened almond milk is a simple swap. And don’t worry, you’ll get plenty of calcium!
