The Benefits of Living Mindfully

How many of you feel like your life is a series of crises? Putting out fires is your job – but you spend much of your time tired, overwhelmed and frustrated? I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, I’ll show you that it IS possible to live a structured life in a chaotic world.
If you don’t know me, my life sounds pretty complex. In addition to being the news director for the Big Horn Radio Network, I’m a mom; a nutritionist with private clients; and a musician with daily gigs in the summer. But I’ve figured out a way to spend quality time wearing each of these hats without feeling stressed out and without dropping the ball for my clients or my coworkers.
Planning, making healthy choices, and setting up systems are the key.
For example, when you wake up, instead of reaching for a cup of coffee, pour yourself a glass of water with a little lemon juice instead. The lemon juice will help your body flush out the junk that your body has cleaned up overnight – and it will help to wake you up without the artificial stimulation of the caffeine!
When it comes to meal times, take a few minutes the night before and plan what you’re going to eat. For example, instead of a donut or fatty breakfast sandwich, choose a banana and a handful of raw nuts. Plan a salad for lunch each day, and make dinner times simple by utilizing your crock pot or whipping up a stir fry that only takes minutes.
At lunch, it’s good to take an actual break. Get away from your desk, sit down and breathe. Take a moment to be grateful for the food, for your work, for your family and friends. It will help you get through the rest of your day more peacefully.
When it comes to your schedule, planning your day with gaps between meetings is important to allow for unexpected circumstances. And review your to-do list the night before so you don’t get to work and be instantly overwhelmed.
Do you have time set aside in your day for exercise? Remember, even 15 minutes a day can boost your energy levels, decrease your risk of heart disease, and contribute to weight loss.
Making healthy changes doesn’t have to be complex. But they can be life-altering! Choosing a few small changes, implemented over time, can make a huge difference in your stress level AND your productivity.
