Why Diets Fail

When you struggle with your health or with excess weight, it’s easy for others to say, “just set your mind to it.” But until you’re ready, you’ll just experience failure, which can be discouraging. I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, we’ll look at why most diets fail – and how you can overcome that trend.
Did you know that 99 percent of people who go on a diet gain weight again? In fact, according to researchers, the average person gains 11 pounds for every diet they go on.
So why do people fail when they try to lose weight? Dr. Mark Hyman listed five reasons – first, you use willpower instead of science to control your appetite. To keep from starving yourself, eat enough whole fresh food to satisfy your appetite, and eat balanced meals that contain protein, healthy fat and non-starchy carbs like veggies and fruit.
It’s also important to focus on the QUALITY of the food you eat, rather than the quantity. Our society is very focused on calories, but when it comes to health, calories don’t really matter. If you focus on quality whole foods, use grains and beans sparingly, and consider sugar as a recreational drug, you’ll get closer to your health goals faster.
And don’t fall for the low-fat diet myth. Over the last 30 years, in which we’ve all been conditioned to eat less fat and more carbs, our society is fatter and sicker than ever. Rather, studies have shown that by eating more fat and less carbs you feel more full, speed up your metabolism and lose weight more quickly.
If all else fails, though, consider the idea that you may have an underlying medical reason why the weight isn’t coming off. Inflammation can be driven by hidden food allergies and sensitivities, toxins, and gut problems could prevent you from reaching your health goals. It’s best to visit with a medical professional to try to get to the bottom of those concerns.
But above all, have a plan. Work with a nutritionist or find a plan that works for you, that you can commit to, and that is sustainable! When you find a method that clicks with you, your motivation will be unstoppable.
