Wyoming Republican Party Releases Notice of Vacancy in the Office of Secretary of State

On September 16th, 2022, Governor Mark Gordon notified the Wyoming Republican Party Chairman, W. Frank Eathorne, that Secretary of State Edward A. Buchanan has resigned, which has created a vacancy in the office of Secretary of State.

Pursuant to Wyoming Statutes, §22-18-111(a)(i), the Wyoming Republican Party State Central Committee is now required to hold a meeting within fifteen days of the notice to select three persons for the Governor’s appointment selection.
W. Frank Eathorne, Wyoming Republican Party Chairman, announced that “applications are being accepted for candidates to fill this vacancy.”
Pursuant to Article 4 § 11 of the Wyoming Constitution, any person who has “attained the age of twenty-five (25) years” and has “the qualifications of state electors” may apply. Therefore, any bona fide resident of Wyoming who is at least “25 years old and is registered to vote as a Republican” may apply for consideration to fill the vacancy.
On Saturday, September 24th, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. a selection meeting will be held at the Wind River Recreation Center, 424 South Main St., Pavillion, Wyoming. The meeting is open to the public and attendees will hear from qualified applicants and the State Central Committee will select three persons whose names will be forwarded to Governor Gordon for this consideration.
The candidate selected by the Governor will serve the remaining months of the current term. Chuck Gray won the August 16th Republican primary for Secretary of State, beating out Tara Nethercott. Currently, it’s looking like Mr. Gray will run unopposed in the general election.
Application Procedure
Application packages need to include a letter of interest, a statement of qualifications, and any other information pertinent to the office. The application package should not exceed ten pages. Applicants should plan to attend the meeting to present themselves, providing 75 copies of the application package for the Committee members. All applications will be considered public information.
