Healthier Employees = Happier Workplace

A huge portion of our lives revolves around our professions. So when it comes to being the healthiest version of ourselves, creating healthy habits around the office is an integral piece of the puzzle. I’m Wendy Corr, and in today’s Wellness Tip, I’ll help you identify ways in which you can have fewer sick days and a more productive career!
Recent studies have found that unhealthy employees cost their employers $73.1 billion a year, and file twice the number of workers’ compensation claims. On the other hand, employees who eat healthy are 25 percent more likely to have higher job performance, and absenteeism is 27 percent lower for those workers who eat healthy and regularly exercise.
Additionally, improving the health of an employee actually impacts their entire family’s health, since healthier habits like cooking at home and exercising regularly often carry over to their children and spouse, again leading the employee to need fewer sick days.
And since many of us spend more time at work than we do at home, making our workplace a healthier environment is key to our success. But, really, you don’t need to take drastic steps. Instead, small changes are more than enough to start living a healthier life.
For example, there’s a huge percentage of men and women walking through life dehydrated. Afternoon hunger cravings, random headaches, and general feelings of fogginess, all of these can be attributed to dehydration.
And replacing the candy bowl in your office for a dish of nuts and a bowl of fruit can make a huge difference. You can have the best intentions to avoid those cookies and snacks that are inevitably brought in by well-meaning co-workers and clients. But, after a stressful few hours of calls and emails, resisting those foods aren’t very likely.
Since you’re probably going to snack, keep your own stash of healthy snacks around. Munching on fruits and nuts will provide your body with quality nutrients and an assortment of vitamins and minerals along with providing energy to help you get through the day.
Other habits you can implement at work include taking standing breaks every 30 minutes, keeping positive and uplifting images and elements in your workspace to relieve stress, and simply washing your hands regularly to minimize the potential for illness – all of these elements increase productivity for you, and keeps your boss happy, too.
